Deep in the forests of northeast Bangladesh, primates and wildlife rescued from the illegal pet trade and habitat destruction are in urgent need of care.
The Wildlife Rescue Centre at Lawachara National Park sits at the heart of one of Asia’s most threatened biodiversity hotspots, home to endangered Western Hoolock Gibbons, Capped Langurs, Phayre’s Leaf Monkeys, pangolins, and hornbills. As an intern, you’ll be working directly alongside the resident vet, delivering hands-on clinical care and contributing to the rehabilitation of some of the region’s most vulnerable species.
You’ll be actively involved in the day-to-day veterinary care of rescued primates and other wildlife, administering treatments, assisting with procedures, and monitoring recovery. The caseload is varied and the environment is demanding, but the experience you’ll gain is the kind that sets a veterinary career apart.
Your responsibilities will include:
This internship runs year-round with a minimum stay of 4 weeks, extendable up to 12 weeks.
Not included:
This internship offers rare, direct clinical experience in wildlife veterinary medicine. Develop skills dealing with endangered primate species in an active rescue and rehabilitation setting that few placements can match.
By the end of your placement you’ll have gained experience in:
On successful completion, you’ll receive a certificate of completion and a professional reference to support your CV and career development. Academic credit is possible through on-site mentoring, though publishing research data externally requires government approval.
This internship is open to veterinary students and qualified professionals looking to develop their clinical experience in wildlife medicine. You’ll need to be prepared for practical, hands-on work in a tropical environment and comfortable adapting to a very different cultural setting.
You’ll need:
The centre is located within Lawachara National Park in the Sylhet division of northeast Bangladesh. A stretch of semi-evergreen and mixed deciduous forest that forms part of the Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot, one of the most ecologically significant and threatened regions on the planet. The nearest town is Sreemangal, around 10 kilometres away, set among sweeping tea gardens and known locally as the tea capital of Bangladesh.

The area rewards exploration on days off. Trek through the national park for birdwatching, visit the water lily-covered Madhabpur Lake, or head to the Baikka Beel wetland sanctuary, a haven for migratory birds. Sreemangal’s tea cabins are famous for their seven-layer tea, a local institution worth seeking out.
The centre is approximately six hours by road from Dhaka Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, with private car transfers available for US$80 each way.
